The City of West Des Moines has become the fastest growing city in the state of Iowa, currently ranking as the ninth largest based on population. Once a bedroom community, West Des Moines has become an employment center with a daytime workforce of 47,000 as of December 2004 and a shopping and entertainment destination for Central Iowa. The mission of Community Education is to create an environment for lifelong learning which seeks citizen involvement in responding to changing needs, promotes social progress and encourages personal growth through the sharing of human resources and financial support. West Des Moines Community Education operates early childhood programs (Brighter Beginnings and Project Shine), a community service learning program (I-CARE), a continuing education program for adults (Learnwest), intramural sports for junior high and high school students, a before and after school childcare and summer daycamp program (Kids West) and summer classes for elementary school students. Community Education also organizes the use of district facilities outside of school hours, provides a wellness program for district employees and partners with the Iowa Senior Olympics.

Prairie Meadows has been a vital part of the central Iowa community since it began operations in 1989.
